Why Aren't Carrots a Keto Food?
Carrots are not considered a strict keto food because they contain a comparably high amount of carbohydrates, mainly natural sugars. While they have some fiber, which can counters the impact of carbs on blood sugar, the net carb count is still too high for most people following a strict ketogenic or low-carb diet.
Below is a breakdown of why carrots are not a part of the Keto or low-carb diet:
Carbohydrates: Carrots contain about 10 grams of carbohydrates per 100 grams. While this is low, on a keto diet, where carb intake is typically limited to around 20-50 grams daily, it can add up quickly, especially if you eat larger portions.
Sugar: Carrots have natural sugars, primarily sucrose, glucose, and fructose. A 100-gram serving of carrots can contain 4-5 grams of sugar.
Fiber: Carrots contain fiber, which is good for digestion and can help slow down the absorption of sugars into the bloodstream. However, the net carb count (total carbs minus fiber) is still significant.
For those strictly following a keto or low-carb diet, it's a better idea to include low-carb vegetables like leafy greens (spinach, kale, lettuce), cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage), and other non-starchy vegetables like zucchini, avocado, and cucumber.
Unless you're following a less strict keto or low-carb diet or are in a maintenance phase, you can include small amounts of carrots into your meals while keeping track of your overall carb intake for the day.
The number of cups in a 100-gram serving of carrots can vary depending on how the carrots are cut, grated or sliced. However, as a rough estimate:
One hundred grams of carrots is equivalent to 2/3 cup of grated carrots.
For sliced carrots, it's approximately 1/2 to 3/4 cup.
For baby carrots, it's about 3/4 to 1 cup.
Bear in mind these are approximate measurements and can vary based on the size and density of the carrots. You can eat many low-carb foods on the Keto or low-carb diet. However, carrots are not one of them. Sorry!
